LAB in a DROP – Experiments in a Drop of Water
Course Content:
Topics: Introduction to chemistry, acids and bases, food chemistry, open experimentation, and a focus on electrochemistry.
The reaction space of a test tube is transferred into the natural reaction space of a drop of water — “LAB in a DROP.” Experiments without containers, conducted on a structured surface, are the unique feature of this approach.
Even larger classes can safely and simultaneously experiment using the proposed methodology and didactic concept. “Without drop-based experiments, experimental chemistry in German schools will hardly move forward.” The fascination of well-known student experiments is expanded through the “LAB in a DROP” methods. Reactants, products, and the reaction pathway can be observed simultaneously and analyzed sustainably. You’re much closer to the action.
In the workshop, participants will learn the “IKEA principle” of student chemistry experiments: Keep it simple, modular setup, minimal equipment, sustainability, time savings, and hazard reduction. The experiments are engaging and exciting, designed to be completed within the length of the song “Hamborger Veermaster.” The use of micro-burners and capillary tube experiments round out the methods. The motto: Less is more.
Note: The VCI (German Chemical Industry Association) supports the initial purchase of “LAB in a DROP” equipment for schools with funding of €1,500.
