22.04.26 LAB in a DROP – Experiments in a Water Drop

Course content:

Topics include introductory chemistry lessons, acid–base chemistry, food chemistry, free experimental work, and a focus on electrochemistry.

The reaction space of a test tube is transferred into the natural reaction space of a water droplet. “LAB in a DROP” enables experiments without conventional glassware; instead, a structured surface is used as the experimental environment. This represents a unique feature of these experiments.

Even larger classes can conduct experiments simultaneously and safely using the proposed methodology and didactic approach. “Without droplet experiments, experimental chemistry in German schools will hardly develop further.” The fascination of well-known student experiments is expanded through the “LAB in a DROP” approach. Reactants, products, and the reaction pathway can be observed simultaneously and evaluated in a sustainable way. Learning becomes more immediate and immersive.

In this workshop, participants will become familiar with the “IKEA principle” of chemical student experiments: keep it simple, modular design, minimal equipment, sustainability, time efficiency, and risk minimization. The experiments are short and engaging, comparable in duration to the song “Hamborger Veermaster.” The use of microburners and capillary tubes complements the methodological approach. Motto: less is more.

Note: The VCI supports the purchase of an initial “LAB in a DROP” equipment set for schools with € 1,500.
